Stingray SV-4

The Stingray SV-4 is Wood Violins' first production instrument. Based on their popular Stingray violin body style, they took the manufacturing abroad to reduce production costs. The result is one of the strongest entry-level electric violin offerings ever.

Fit and finish are excellent -- the instrument looks and feels well-made. The Stingray SV-4 Violin is available in a gorgeous metallic red finish, as well as a classic gloss black. This design has no upper bout, so there's nothing in your way when you move up the neck. However, more-traditional players will have to adjust to not having the familiar physical reference of the upper bout when they're shifting into the upper positions.

The $599 price for the instrument includes a basic bow and case, rosin, Resonans shoulder pad, instrument cable, and headphones.

We strongly recommend our $45 upgrade to D'addario Helicore strings -- the strings that come on the instrument have a thin and tinny sound, and intonation on the G string can sometimes be altered slightly when you bear down on the bow.

The Stingray SV-4 works well with a variety of acoustic amplifiers, but Mark Wood has worked with the manufacturer to specially voice the Wood Violin Amp, a 10-watt practice amplifier with built-in distortion and delay. For performance situations, you can mic the amplifier to run it through the sound board. Wood Violins has also come out with the Wood Wah, their take on the classic wah-wah pedal.

Both the Wood Violin Amp and the Wood Wah are available separately, or you can buy the full package with the Stingray SV-4 for only $799.
