It was 10 years ago this week that Music Explorium gave birth to Electric Violin Shop. Sales of electric violins at Music Explorium had become so strong that a new entity was needed. The name was chosen and website launched in February 2002, when an alcove about 12 feet long and 6 feet deep held our entire display of electric strings, amps and other gear, which in those days included synthesizers and analog effect pedals from Bob Moog (made in Asheville, NC). We had phone calls last week from, not one, but two players wanting to put a pickup on fine Cremonese violins – a Stradivari and a Rogeri, both over 300 years old! We discussed their concerns just like we do with every customer, but the stakes are certainly higher when the instrument in question is worth more than my house, my cars, my business and pretty much everything I own!
