Electric Upright Bass

The easier portability of electric basses has appealed to upright bassists for years. With excellent acoustic sound quality and accurate tracking of both bowing and plucking nuances, today's bass viol player can have it both ways. You can even drive to the gig, fully equipped, in an MG, a Mini or a Miata - even with the top up!

Eminence
Portable Bass

Eminence Upright Bass

The Eminence portable electric upright bass by G. Edward Lutherie has a narrow acoustic body, so you can hear yourself without an amp. The bass's acoustic tone is quiet, but richer and more pleasing to the ear than you'd expect from such a thin body.

The Eminence Bass uses the RealistĀ® pickup system, developed by bass guru David Gage and Ned Steinberger. Amplified tone is amazingly rich and authentic bass -- a listener in the next room would swear you were playing a fine upright bass with a good microphone. Gary does an exceptionally fine job setting up the Eminence basses, so they play extremely well both pizzicato and with the bow. This instrument is obviously much more portable than a standard upright bass, and is also available with a removable neck model for those who fly with their bass, and in four and five string models.

NS Design
WAV-4 Bass

NS Design Electric Upright Basses

The NS Design Electric Double Bass combines the sleek minimalist design Ned Steinberger is famous for, with a great upright bass sound. Tone control knobs allow modifying your sound, and if you want more punch, get one with the optional EMG magnetic pickups. You can then choose a wide variety of sounds from one bass.

NS WAV-4 Bass

The newest player in NS Design's EUB lineup is among the least-expensive electric upright's we've ever carried. At only $895, the WAV-4 is an outrageous value for a bass that sounds this good. Amplified tone is quite convincing, with bass and treble control on-board, and a single toggle switch controls whether the patented PolarĀ® pickup system will respond to the bridge's vertical vibration, for more of an electric bass sound, or the lateral vibrations more common to bowed playing, which give an believably authentic bowed acoustic bass tone, with a more acoustic-sounding, percussive pizzicato sound. Available in amberburst and red transparent (which show the figure of the curly maple top) and gloss black.

NS Design
CR-4M Bass

NS Design CR and EU Series Basses

Steinberger CR series electric uprights are available with either four- or five-string bass, and include Ned's specially designed stand (very heavy duty - great design too), and heavy duty gig bag. His CRT Bass model more closely resembles an acoustic bass in sound and feel. The EU Bass uses carbon fiber laminated with maple for very lengthy sustain and a warp resistant neck with 5 or 6 strings.

The new NS BassCello brings a bowable bridge to the same scale length as the bass guitar. It has 5 strings, and can be tuned in fourths or fifths!

Yamaha
SVB-200 Bass

Yamaha Silent Basses

Yamaha two "Silent" Basses in its line of electric uprights. The SVB-100 which has a full outline of the upper bout of the bass, and is built to the scale of a regular upright bass (usually 3/4, or 41.5"). Their most popular bass, the SVB-200, which has the removable outline of the top half of a normal bass's upper both, but is built to a slightly shorter scale length (40"). Both instruments sound great, both pizzicato and bowed, but some players have an adjustment period when playing the SVB-200, due to its shorter length.

Zeta Upright Bass

Zeta Basses are all MIDI compatible, with purchase of the Synthony MIDI Controller, and come with outrigger attachments to feel like you are playing a normal upright. The Zeta Crossover Bass has a shorter scale length, and can be played on a strap like an electric bass guitar, or upright on a stand.
