Audio-Technica's ATM-350 instrument microphone comes with a unique mounting system for violin family instruments. With the windscreen removed, the microphone slides into the loop on an an elastic band that attaches to the after-length of the strings, between the tailpiece and the bridge. The mic hangs above the strings, pointed directly towards the bridge of the instrument.
This mic does a great job of reproducing your instrument's tone accurately. However, on a violin it can sound just a bit boomy and transmit more bow noise than you might prefer, due to its close proximity to the bridge. The ATM-350 sounds amazing on a cello, however, as the bigger instrument has enough after-length to put more distance between the microphone and the bridge. This results in clear, accurate reproduction of the cello's tone, with a warm, rich sound that's not hollow-sounding (as is often the case with microphones).
