Skyinbow electric violins are the brainchild of Kenny Johnson, and are hand-made in Scotland. His early models had thicker bodies constructed like a traditional violin, but it was with the introduction of the S1 model in 1997 that his instruments really started to catch on.
A lightweight, attractive design, the Skyinbow S1 violin is constructed of traditional tone woods, but the flamed maple is on the top, and the spruce is on the back -- the opposite of a traditional acoustic violin. The top and back are arched, in a hollow-body design that lends the instrument a very natural, open tone when played amplified. Its sound is much more brilliant in the upper registers than many other electric violins, yet the lower strings are still wonderfully rich and full. The Skyinbow S1 violin has an acoustic resonance and a spaciousness to its amplified sound that endears it to many players who dislike the tone of many other electric violins. These same design features result in a somewhat fuller, more resonant sound when the S1 violin is played unamplified, as well.
With their five-string S1 model, Skyinbow has done an excellent job with the string spacing at the nut and the curvature of the bridge. Though the neck of the five-string is not terribly wider than the four-string model, the player never feels that the hand is cramped when fingering across the strings in first position, and the difference in the geometry of the bow seems about as slight as it can be. This is a really comfortable instrument to play, with a tone that's especially well-suited to Celtic, folk, bluegrass, or country -- really, players of any acoustic style of amplified music would find this instrument well-suited to their needs.
Skyinbow violins are available in gloss black and blue metallic opaque painted finishes, as well as transparent red, green, and blue "burst" finishes which show off the figure of the maple top.
