John cut the body of this instrument from a beautifully-figured piece of quilted maple. The violin and the matching removable upper bout have a transparent light amber finish, which really accentuates the beauty of the wood.
This particular example has a Barbera standard transducer bridge, which gives it a rich, strong tone with plenty of punch -- it's especially well-suited to high-gain effects, where it has a meatier tone than single-transducer pickup systems.
The upper bout is more substantial than the upper bout indicators on many electric violins, so it feels quite natural to traditional players. It's removable, so if you're more of an improvising player, you can stow it in the case and get it out of your way.
Machine tuners are arranged along the inside of the lower bout of the instrument, so that tuning is effortless and stable, while the weight of the tuners is centered directly over the shoulder, so it feels lighter than it is, as the weight it transmitted down the spine.
Comes with a nice oblong violin case, modified to hold the instrument.
